The village is known above all for the notable plateau under which it nestles it and from which it takes its name. However, before climbing to the Giara it is opportune to make a quick trip around the old centre, among whose antique houses one finds the parish church of S.Teresa, with beautiful XVI cent wooden Gothic objects and, in the interior, a polyptych, of Gothic and Renaissance elements. On the left, in the direction of Nuragus, one can turn up the asphalted road to the Giara di Gesturi. Passing one of the refreshment huts, realised here as along the access to other nearby centres, one arrives at its eastern edge, where a series of dirt roads have been opened. There roads criss-cross the Giara, and allow the flow of visitors to visit it, we ask the visitors to park their cars on the edge of the plateau and then either walk or use the mountain bikes which are available. In this way, visitors will not alter the environment and will appreciate it.

They will be able to watch and photograph more easily the small horses, without frightening them. The road that comes from the Gesturi converges on the area of the Nuraghic village Bruncu Madugui, near the nuraghe of the same name, also called nuraghe Bruncu Madili a very good example of the Giara’s old defensive screen which was connected not only to the complex at Barumini, but also to the dozen querable natural rock fortress of 50 square Km. The Giara of Gesturi belongs administratively to Barumini, to Tuili and Setzu 206 inhabitants, m15 in the Province of Cagliari , and to Genoni in the province of Nuoro, the geographical connotations of the plateau were caused by volcanic basaltic lava from the third era, it has an average altitude of about 450-500m with the modest elevations of M.Zeparedda 609m and of M.Zeppara Manna 580m. it is about 4KM wide, 12 km long and more or less oval in form. Its major axes run in north –west direction, its minor ones south-eastwards. The lithologic nature of the soil determines a peculiar aspect of the Giara, that seasons, they are due to rain water being trapped in the natural hollows, the biggest, in the territories of Tuili and Genoni, are both called Pauli Maiori, and are the only perennial ones. The flora of the area varies according to the zone. On the plateau there are great numbers of cork trees, but far more the southern side, of Gesturi and Tuili, than at Genoni, where there is more grazing. The vegetation of the Paulis is made up of swampy plants such as the buttercup and the moonwort, for this reason the best time to visit the Giara is in the spring, also because in the summer this place positively simmers. The fauna here, which was once very rich, still in includes foxes, hedgehogs, martens, kites, woodpeckers, jays, hoopoes and many other species, apart from, of course, the most place-defining small horses of the Giara, known horse in extant Europe. The fundamental morphologic characteristics which distinguish it from the other breeds are its very dark, shining bay colour, its very long mane, its small size (1m20cm maximum, at withers) and above all the unmistakable, sweet gaze from almost almond shaped eyes, that inspires great tenderness and affection. In the Giara there are about 600-700 exemplars. |
