 Towards Cagliari

If from Senorbì you decide to take state road 128 in the direction of Monastir, you can also make side trip sto Ussana and Villasor, farming towns with ancient traditions and whose countryside has rich archaeological and historical heritage. Not to be missed is San Sperate, a charming museum-town famous for its murales and stone sculptures, and its lively artistic and cultural life, it is also well-known for its excellent peaches. Back on SS 130, we can turn onto SP 3, to reach Villaspeciosa, Decimoputzu and Vallermosa, crossed by the Riu Mannu creating rich soil for excellent fruit and vegetable products.

On the borders of the province lies Siliqua, on the Rivet Cixerri, at one time a holding of the Counts della Gherardesca. Near the town, perched on a rocky peak are the ruins of the Castle of Aquafredda, belonging to Count Ugolino immortalised by Dante. The castle can be reached after a long climb through the scents of panoramic view. On our way back to Cagliari along state road 130, turn onto SP 3 to admire the fine Romanesque church of Santa Maria at Uta and then on to Decimomannu and Assemini, famous for its pottery handicrafts and the Aquilegia Natural History Museum. Decimomannu has Roman origins as indicated by its name, ten miles from Cagliari, and the imposing arched bridge in the area known as Su Meriagu. On the last Sunday in September this town holds a lively festival in honour of   Santa Greca, who was martyred under Emperor  Diocletian. This famous festival includes religious ceremonies round the little 14th century church which contains the Saint’s tomb, and popular events with open-air spit roasts, handicraft stalls and folk songs and dancers, lasting the whole weekend.
